Shangri-La’s Tanjung Aru Resort and Spa, Kota Kinabalu received the Exceptional Achievement in Environmental Performance and the Sabah State Award from Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia, YAB Tan Sri Dato’ Haji Muhyiddin Bin Mohd Yassin at the 2010/2011 Prime Minister’s Hibiscus Award ceremony on 20 January 2012.

The Prime Minister’s Hibiscus Award is jointly organized by Malaysia’s leading private sector non-profit organizations concerned with corporate environmental management and performance since 1996. The award presents an opportunity for public recognition of business and industry’s environmental accomplishment and leadership and serves to create environmental awareness amongst enterprises that have yet to demonstrate environmental stewardship.

“The Prime Minister’s Hibiscus Award 2010/2011 was only conferred to two organizations in Malaysia, one being Petronas, Malaysia’s national oil & gas company and the other being us, the only hotel in Malaysia to receive this award: Shangri-La’s Tanjung Aru Resort and Spa. It is definitely a marvellous encouragement and appreciation to what we have been doing for the community and environment. It has been a great journey for Shangri-la’s Tanjung Aru Resort and Spa in the last decade: we started our own bottling plant, recycling plastic bottles and use only glass bottles to serve drinking waters in the hotel;

we support sustainable fishing and healthy marine life by implanted the ban of serving shark fins in all restaurants and banquets in May 2011 and purchasing only sustainably caught fishes from local fishermen. Everything we have been doing deeply reflects on the resort’s commitment in protecting our environment and the staff’s dedication and contribution. Environmental practices have now become a part of the resort’s culture and we encourage and appreciate if all organizations could do the same,” said Andrew Steele, general manager of Shangri-La’s Tanjung Aru Resort and Spa, Kota Kinabalu.
