Wildlife Excursions in Sandakan

Sandakan is the second-largest city in Sabah, East Malaysia, on the north-eastern coast of Borneo. It is located on the east coast of the island.  Sandakan is known as the gateway for ecotourism destination in Sabah, such as the Sepilok Orang Utan, the Rainforest Discovery Centre, Turtle island Parks, Kinabatangan River and Gomantong Caves.

Sandakan City  tour takes you on a journey to explore Sandakan; start out the day with a pleasant and scenic morning drive to visit some of most prominent landmark and historical sites, with the first stop at the Rotary Observatory Pavilion for bird's eye view of Sandakan town, .St Michael All Angels Church, the Buli Sim Sim Water Village and lastly the Puh Jih Syh Chinese Buddhist Temple which offer panaromic vista of the Sandakan Bay. 


No visit is complete without seeing the Wildman of Borneo - Orang Utan. You may have a greater chance to  up close and personal with the Orang Utan in World famous Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre, which  is located near the town of Sandakan.  It was established in 1964 as a refuge for orphaned orang utans.  Orang Utans are primates which live only on the Southeast Asian islands or Borneo and Sumatra.


At the center, proceed to the platform to observe the daily 1000hrs &  1500hrs  feeding of the Orang Utan. After the feeding, you can opted to watch the video show on the center or depart to your next destination.


TURTLE ISLAND PARK

Come and discover the Turtle Island Park; boat ride takes approximately 1 hours  by speed boat ( depend on weather condition).  Turtle Islands Park is located within the Turtle Islands, which lie in the Sulu Sea, some 40 kimoleters north of Sandakan in Sabah, East Malaysia.  It consist of 3 Islands  - Selingan, Bakkungan Kechil and Gulisan, including the surrounding coral reefs and ocean. The Park is noted for its green turtles, and hawksbill turtles which lay their eggs on the beaches of the islands.


While there, witness the whole activities of turle laying eggs and covering the hole, tagging of the turle by the park; transferring of the eggs to the hatchery, and if there is young turtle hatchlings, an opportunity to observe the hatchlings being release to the sea.

SUKAU KINABATANGAN & GOMANTONG CAVE

Back to the maintain, we continue our journey overland to Sukau Kinabatangan River.  Kinabatangan River is the second longest river in Malaysia, with a length of 560 kilometers from its headwaters in the mountains of southwest Sabah, to its outlet at the Sulu Sea, east of Sandakan.



Kinabatangan is known for its remarkable wildlife and fascinating habitats such as limestone caves at Gomantong hill, dryland dipterocarp forests, riverine forest, freshwater swamp forest, oxbow lake and salty mangrove swamps near the coast.



Journey from Sandakan  to Sukau Kinabatangan  takes approximately 2 1/2 hours drive. Famous activities  at Sukau are the river cruise in search for the odd nosed monkeys - the Proboscis Monkeys and other wildlife, the Ox-bow lake and also the Gomantong Caves.

At Gomantong Cave, explore the collection of edible bird nests; sometime  you can see  a lot of workers climbing long rattan ladders to collect the expensive nest.

LABUK BAY SANCTUARY

Labuk Bay Sanctuary is another tourists attraction in Sandakan. In the center of the mangrove forests of Semawangis the  Labuk Bay Sanctuary, where you can see Borneo's indigenous proboscis monkeys. The privately-owned sanctuary located with an oil palm estate gives you the chance to observe these animals up close and personal.

Males proboscis monkey is easily sported with big dangling noses, reddish flat-top hairstyles, white tails and markings, and pot bellies. The females on the other hand, are much smaller and have up-turned noses.

Labuk Bay Sanctuary is easily accessible by vehicle. Visitors can visit this place to witness the feeding time at 0930am & 14:30hrs daily @ Platform A; 1130am & 16:30hrs daily @ Platform B.
